CROSS-CULTURAL TIPS: WHEN IN ROME, DO LIKE THE ROMANS

ASIA/FAR EAST

In Japan, a business card is regarded
as a projection of your own self in the
spirit of a samurai's respect for a sword.
When receiving one always hold the card
firmly in your hand, don't put it away.

Always show respect for business cards

CENTRAL AMERICA

In Mexico, punctuality does not hold
the same level of importance as it does
here in America. You should not be
surprised if your counterparts or client
arrive late to a scheduled meeting.

Punctuality is always recommended

SOUTH AMERICA

In Argentina, as in many other Latin
 American countries, individuals may hold
a conversation at a closer distance as
opposed to Americans, who keep a larger
 personal space between each other.

Physical contact denotes trustworthiness

THE CARIBBEAN

In Puerto Rico, you can bring up any
subject for casual conversation, but you
should keep your view about the island's
 statehood aspirations to yourself since
this is known to be a volatile subject.

Some subjects are better left to natives

THE MIDDLE EAST

In Israel, visitors must avoid sharing
their personal views of the Israeli
Palestinian conflict as it is impolite for
foreign nationals to express an opinion
 on such a delicate matter.

Political/religious talk should be avoided

NORTH AFRICA

In Egypt, the country has a more
relaxed view of the division between men
and women, however, a woman should
not initiate a handshake with Egyptian
men, but wait instead for it to be offered.

As a rule, avoid physical contact with ladies

WESTERN EUROPE

In Spain, business deals depend on
the relationship you develop with your
client or counterpart. Expect them not to
bring up business matters until after they
tell you about their life or family.

Make an effort to know your counterpart

EASTERN EUROPE

In Russia, as in other former Soviet
republics, proper names may include a
 patronymic reference (son/daughter of)
between the first and last names. This
is a very respectful name format.

Do your best to pronounce names clearly

AUSTRALIA

In Australia, the use of the English
language by natives can be quite
amusing to Americans, but Aussies don't
like it when foreigners abuse the use of
 expressions such as "G'day mate!"

Never say that you speak better English!
