English
- It is estimated that there are 300 million native speakers
and 300 million more who use English as a second language and
a further 100 million use it as a foreign language. It is the
language of science, aviation, computing, diplomacy, and
tourism. It is listed as the official or co-official language
of over 45 countries and is spoken extensively in other
countries where it has no official status.
Why is the English language so important to the
world?
Half of all business deals are conducted in English. Two
thirds of all scientific papers are written in English. Over
70% of all post / mail is written and addressed in English.
Most international tourism and aviation is conducted in
English. |

Romance
languages are those that have their origins in the Latin
language, whose cultural and social capital was the city of
Rome. Among them are some of the most popular languages we
teach right here at Berlitz Orlando: |

Spanish
- The Spanish that is spoken today is directly derived from
the Latin language and its native-speakers number over 300
million people, with many more non-natives speaking it as a
second language. Its influence over Central and South America,
as well as the Caribbean, is directly related to Spain's
colonization from the 15th through the 19th century. |

Italian
- Italian is a direct descendant of the Latin language and it
is spoken by over 60 million people in the Italian peninsula
and neighboring regions in Europe as well as the Mediterranean
and the Adriatic Sea. Italian is known as a strong influence
in the naming of fashion items and epicurean delicacies, and
is the language used in the singing of Opera. |

French
- French, with approximately 98 million speakers living
principally in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada, and parts
of Africa is one of the most widely spoken Romance languages.
The French language is synonymous with love thanks to its
cuisine and fine wines, symbolic of a perfect romantic evening
-- or kiss. |

Portuguese
-Portuguese, with 137 million speakers in Portugal, Brazil,
and parts of Africa and Asia is another influential Romance
language. More people speak the language outside of Portugal
than in the motherland. |

Japanese
- The Japanese language is spoken by the approximately 120
million inhabitants of Japan, and by the Japanese living in
Hawaii and on the North and South American main lands. It is
also spoken as a second language by the Chinese and the Korean
people who lived under Japanese occupation in the early 20th
century. |

Chinese
(Mandarin)
- Mandarin Chinese is regarded as the variant used to conduct
official in China, such as in government, social and cultural
organizations. It is spoken by more than 885 million
people throughout the People's Republic of China. Cantonese
Chinese is not as broad, but it is still spoken by over 55
million people living in the region that gives it its name. |

Russian
- Russian is one of the five official languages of the United
Nations, and ranks with Chinese, English, Spanish, and Hindi
as a major world language. It is the native language of 145
million citizens of the Russian Federation, the world's
largest country and it is still spoken or at least understood
in many countries of the former USSR, such as Ukraine, and
former member countries of the Warsaw Pact, such as the Czech
Republic. Altogether about 240 million people around the world
speak Russian today. |
